Despite a projected deficit of over $113 million for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the only bright spot in the revenue outlook for the City of Manteca is a boom in retail construction. There was a 12 percent decline in retail sales revenues from last year to this year.

In addition to the new president, John Burnett, city attorney, and Ted Poulos, pharmacist, were elected vice-presidents, as well as John Gatto, Bank of America, who was re-elected treasurer.

Henry Hubbart of Manteca was selected as Manteca's new daytime policeman from an impressive field of 16 candidates. A city council interview committee that interviewed him personally last week recommended his hiring on Monday night.

In a meeting of the city council Tuesday night, City Attorney J. R. Scott read a contract awarded to Mario DePaoli for hauling city garbage. The contract, which became effective on October 3, is for 10 years. In the contract, DiPaoli has the exclusive right to collect garbage in the city.

A levee to protect the land north of the Manteca Stanislaus River, south of Manteca, against flood waters look exceedingly bright, according to a report made by E. C. Woodruff and Guss Schmiedt at a meeting of the directors of the local chamber of commerce Tuesday night. Powers appointed E. C. Woodruff, W. J. Woodward and E. E. Douglass to assist in any way possible in getting this work completed.

 

Because of the rapid spread of the influenza, the city trustees have responded with drastic measures to resolve the problem. An ordinance was prepared by City Attorney J. R. Scott and passed to an adjourned meeting on Tuesday. The city health board must approve all meetings taking place in public places, such as churches, lodges, pool rooms, and all public gatherings.
